A study on the effectiveness of Halfway house NURIBOM¡¯s short-term intensive rehabilitation service

Abstract
Objective: The purposes of this research were to measure the effectiveness of short-term intensive rehabilitation services and to provide a preliminary data for developing effective and specialized services of Halfway house.

Methods: Pre- and post evaluation for the assessment of functional changes was done to the 35 clients who were discharged from one halfway house located in Seoul city from January, 2012 to March, 2013, and interview with the family members was done, too. And also survey for the mental health practitioners who had a experience of referring clients from or to the halfway was performed.

Results: The study showed that service users who received short-term intensive rehabilitation services were generally improved their function, psychopathology, activities of daily living and quality of life. Family members showed a high level of satisfaction (average 4.6 of 5 points scale) especially in the areas of social burden and hope for rehabilitation. Mental health practitioners responded that clients` improvement were observed in all the six areas that is ADL, social skills, adjustment, insight, rehabilitation needs, and relationship with family members.

Conclusion: Short-term intensive rehabilitation services of halfway house were proved to be effective for the improvement of serious mental illness. The role of halfway house should be recounted and it`s political consideration is needed.
